Röd Studio is a design duo, by designers Anne Louise Rasmussen and Maja Marie Halling, specializing in little works of art made mostly from textile and carpet. We have asked them about their creativity, life, and inspiration.

How and when did your passion for textile and design start?

We were both at an early age drawn towards creating and doing things with our hands. Working with textiles is a very sensuous experience. People often take it for granted because textiles are like our second skin but it’s such a fascinating field also in an anthropological, historical and technical perspective.

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started out as designers?

There’s a lot of things we are glad we didn’t know such as financial headaches! All jokes aside, it’s probably the fact that the world no longer needs a lot of random objects and that it’s okay to take your time to make meaningful and long-lasting designs.

Where do you seek inspiration?

From other cultures and aesthetics. Lately we are hopelessly in love with Mexico. We are so fascinated by the people, their amazing textile tradition and the colours of the country.

How do you use colours in your work, and what does the use of colours do to you?

Colour might actually be the most important ingredient to our work. Colours are so strong semiotic instruments, they help people read and understand objects. We use colours to communicate and create narratives in our rugs.

Is there anything else that you’re also passionate about at the moment?

Feminism! The power of sisterhood and how we make each other grow through support and kindness instead of bringing each other down. It’s so important for the design industry because it’s still very male dominated. But there have been so many amazing female textile artists who paved the way for us.

Passion; also known as dedication, as hunger, it is the desire to destroy oneself for one’s art. To tear down, move, or start over in order to rebuild and expand. The feeling of not being able to let go. It is a human condition that most are bound by.

Even though we are JUST human, JUST women, JUST female, we all have that drive that makes us ‘more than’. It is what makes us-, our stories-, and our creations unique. From a job, to a child, to a hobby gone wild, we, and you, are more than JUST female. We have gathered some of the most inspiring Danish women that we know for a talk about passion, creativity, and the balance between worklife and homelife.

Let their inspiring stories, trials and errors be a reminder that we all can struggle, we can fail, but something will always have us return to that same place of passion. And maybe the point is not necessarily to succeed, but to have given it your all, and grown in the process.

Tell us about your passion, struggle, and successes!
